According to a Pune-based IT union, Wipro has asked freshers who had accepted a lower package of INR 3.5 lakh per annum instead of INR 6.5 lakh per annum to clear a program called Project Readiness Programme (PRP) or face termination. These candidates had already undergone a training program called “velocity” for four-six months to upgrade their packages from INR 3.5 lakh to INR 6.5 lakh per annum. The union alleged that the employees were promised onboarding after the velocity program with no further training.
Wipro has clarified that the Project Readiness Program is part of their routine onboarding process designed to ensure that their next-gen associates have the necessary knowledge and skills to start working on customer projects. The candidates will be required to undergo an assessment test with negative marking of 0.25 per question, and failure to secure at least 60% post-final supplementary attempt will lead to termination through HR.
NITES (Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate) has condemned Wipro’s actions towards its fresher employees, stating that the company’s misleading communication and sudden policy changes have put the future of these employees at risk. In February, Wipro reached out to candidates who had accepted an offer of INR 6.5 lakh per annum through its Velocity training program, asking if an offer of INR 3.5 lakh in annual compensation would be acceptable to them instead. In January, the company terminated over 450 trainees after they repeatedly failed internal tests.
