The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially discontinued the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree, cautioning students against seeking admission into the program. The decision communicated through an official notice on December 26, emphasizes that the M.Phil degree is no longer recognized.
According to the UGC notice, certain universities had recently invited fresh applications for the M.Phil program, prompting the regulatory body to clarify the status of the degree. The notice highlights Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D Degree) Regulations 2022, which explicitly states that Higher Educational Institutions are prohibited from offering M.Phil programs.
The notice states, “In this regard, it is informed that the UGC has framed University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D Degree) Regulations, 2022, which has been published in the Gazette of India on 7th November 2022.”
The UGC has requested universities to take immediate measures to cease admissions to the M.Phil program for the academic year 2023-24.
