The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a public notice stating that Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Maharashtra is banned from admitting students into Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online courses for the academic sessions from January-February 2023, July-August 2023, and January-February 2024. NMIMS, a business school that obtained university status in 2003, has violated norms and regulations, prompting the UGC to take action against it.

The UGC has also cautioned prospective students against enrolling in NMIMS programs offered via ODL and online modes. The UGC made the decision to debar NMIMS from offering ODL and online courses during its 556th meeting. UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated that NMIMS had failed to adhere to UGC regulations regarding the Centre for Internal Quality Assurance (CIQA), quality of Self Learning Material and e-Learning Material (e-LM), and the nomenclature of Centre for Distance and Online Learning.

Furthermore, NMIMS had not followed the fee refund policy mandated by the UGC and had received numerous complaints from various stakeholders. The institute can only be permitted to offer ODL and online courses for the academic session starting in July-August 2024 after an on-site visit by the UGC and receiving necessary approvals from the Commission.

The institute has acknowledged the notice on its website and stated that it is in process of examining the notice and working with all concerned to address the issue and resolve the situation at the earliest.
