According to the Career Outlook Report HY1 (January – June 2024) released by TeamLease EdTech, a notable provider of learning and employability solutions, there has been a significant increase in freshers hiring in India. Comparing the first half of 2024 to the same period in 2023, there’s been a six per cent rise, reaching 68% from 62%. This surge in hiring indicates promising opportunities for freshers in the job market.
The report highlights that the overall hiring intent across all job seeker categories has slightly increased to 79.3%, signifying a positive trend in job opportunities. Among the industries showing the highest hiring intent for freshers, e-commerce and technology start-ups take the lead with 55%, closely followed by engineering and infrastructure, and telecommunications at 53% and 50% respectively.
However, the IT sector has witnessed a decline in freshers hiring intent, dropping to 42% in HY1 2024 compared to 49% in HY2 2023. Other sectors like media and entertainment have experienced a three per cent decrease, while travel and hospitality have seen a four per cent increase.
In terms of specific roles, there’s a high demand for freshers in positions such as graphic designer, legal associate, chemical engineer, and digital marketing executive across various industries.
Among cities, Bangalore maintains the highest hiring intent at 69%, followed by Mumbai at 58% and Chennai at 51%. Delhi has seen a two per cent increase from HY2 2023, reaching 45%. Additionally, there’s a marginal increase of three per cent in demand for new talent in HY1 2024 compared to HY2 2023.
Freshers are advised to actively enhance their skills and embrace working alongside Generative AI to stay relevant and leverage its potential in the evolving job market.
The report’s findings are based on a survey conducted across 526 companies of varying sizes, spanning 18 industries across India. The survey encompasses 14 geographical areas, including metros, tier-1, and tier-2 cities, providing a comprehensive view of hiring sentiment in the country.
