As the nation celebrates 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31, 2018, world’s tallest statue – The Statue of Untity has been unveiled in Gujarat. Prime Minster Narendra Modi has inaugurated the statue with great celebration. The statue with a height of 182 meters stands tall among all the other statues in the history including the Statue of Liberty, Spring Temple of Buddha, Ushiku Daibutsu, Homeland Mother or Christ the Redeemer.
While Statue of Unity is 182 meters, Spring Temple of Buddha in China is the second tallest statue with 153 meters (29 meters short), Ushiku Daibutsu in Japan is 120 meters, Statue of Liberty in USA is 93 meters, Homeland Mother in Russia is 85 meters and Christ the Redeemer in Brazil is 38 meters tall.
Back in 2010, this project was announced by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi with a project cost estimated to be 3.050 crore. The project was fully funded by Gujarat government. As a beginning of this project, special purpose vehicle was set up in 2011 under the title of The Sardar Vallabhail Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust which travelled across nearly 1,69,000 villages across the state gathering about 129 tons of iron implements from about 100 million farmers.
The responsibility of building the Statue of Unity was given to Padma Bhushan sculptor Ram V Suthar while the bronze cladding task was undertaken by a Chinese foundry, the Jiangxi Toqine Company.
The statute is a three layered structure with the innermost layer of Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC), followed by a steel structure with the outer layer of 8mm bronze cladding. There are two lifts in the RCC towers that can carry around 26 people to the top in about 30 seconds. The statue is earthquake proof and can withstand wind velocity up to 60 m/s.
While the statue is a showcase of the growing prosperity of the nation and symbolizes unity in diversity, there has been growing criticism and stiff opposition from trials. Some say this statute reflects PM Modi’s political ego.
The Statue will stand high, not just in meters and feet, but much more in terms of academic, historical, national and spiritual values. My vision is to develop the place as a source of inspiration for ages to come
Honourable Prime Minister of India
